Thinner is better in the consumer electronics world

Anyone born before the 2000s can remember the age of bulky electronics. Whether it was a laptop that weighed 20 pounds or a cell phone that couldn't fit into a pocket, products had weight and mobility issues. Companies today are still trying to combine cutting-edge innovations with extreme portability, and recent releases by major suppliers are simply mind-blowing.

At CES 2012, Samsung unveiled its 55-inch OLED TV that will be available in the second half of 2012. The device is 4mm thick - the width of the average ant. The television weighs about 16 pounds, making it easily mountable on any surface, and has OLED black-level technology that offers an incredibly realistic picture.

Apple capitalized on this concept with its earlier Macbook Air products, but the title of thinnest new laptop belongs to the Acer Aspire S5, also due in 2012. The S5 is only 1.5 centimeters thick at its widest point, and includes many features that other ultra-thin notebooks simply had no room to incorporate in the past, such as HDMI and USB compatibility.

With electronic products getting smaller and smaller, it is not hard to imagine a future where the newest notebook might be as thin and flexible as a sheet of paper.
